The Last Color is the color of Happiness over the cruel old traditions –

The Last Color is such an uplifting story by the celebrity chef Vikas Khanna. There is simplicity in his words and yet the lines leave a very powerful impact on a reader. The book is a must read for a reader. There is fragrance of ginger chai, yumminess of crispy samosa, delicacy of pink in a widow life and the flights of a girl who loves to fly. I am deeply touched by few of the lines like –

The Last Color

“Without love not even a Tulsi plant can survive.”

“Ganga travels towards the home of Tagore to listen to his poems”.

Book Review : The Last Color

There is so much fragility in many of the portions of the book. The Last Color is  a heart warming story revolving on the ghats of Ganga at Vaaransi, the city of the dead. The infinite number of lamps lighted at Ganga couldn’t see the injustice which was seen beaming in the eyes of Choti. ( The moon of the story ) The characters Choti, Noor, Anarkali, Rani and Rekha everyone played their role so well. I am touched by the innocence of Choti, motherly care of Anarkali and Noor. These three are my favorite characters from the book.

The book gave me goosebumps at times, when I felt the pain of Noor, when I discovered how Choti and Anarkali added humor to their life and stayed happy with the little things in life. The fireflies and the tree house description were another gorgeousness of the book. Noor’s favorite pink, her pink toenails, the pink book and at the last the shower of pink on Noor by Choti everything decorated the prominence of color in a widow’s life.  I was shocked to read the plainness life they led, the white does not give them peace anymore instead it feels like a burden on them.Widow are made responsible for a crime they never committed.

I am happy that the author wrote this book, it is a work of fiction but shows the problems that a real widow face, struggle of beggars, prohibition of child born like Anarkali etc.  are screaming throughout the book that they are pious too and they have the right to enjoy life. I believe that actually in our society where the culprits like Raja, and the sweets vendor who refuses to offer samosa to Choti and Noor resides, are the one who don’t have the right to live in society.

The Last Color

Till now I knew Chef Khanna for his cooking skills but after the book I have found a new person in him, he is also the one whose writings leave a footprint on heart.

The title of this post just pulled me in here. How true? Why not colors for them too, and their life?
