quarantine read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak review

May 29, 2020

I read the anniversary edition of the book The Book Thief which contains 584 pages. It is published by Alfred A. Knopf.  I like this book not because Death is the narrator of the story but because of the lovely relationship among the characters of the book. Foster parents can be good too and reading about Hans Hubermann as a Dad was the most comforting part of the story for me.

The character of Rudy, Rosa, Max and Frau are my favorite. Rudy always helped Liesel, Rosa was someone who is good in a crisis, Max he is extraordinary creative.

Why I relate The Book Thief to quarantine?

The Book Thief is giving me major quarantine feels. We are all quarantined due to Covid 19 since 6 months now. The virus is spreading like an express train and affecting our lives. Staying at home is the only cure now so I discovered this book to pass time.

In the book there are wars and how everyone stays indoors in the basement to stay protected, I like it when Liesel reads story to cheer up everyone in front of Death.

Liesel as a book thief was stealing books only as and when required and returned them back in the library of the Mayor’s wife. The book is also an eye opener about the cruelty of Hitler, how they burned books and tortured human beings.

In the world where you can be anything, Be Kind

Hans Huberman was not only a father that every daughter wishes for but also was an epitome of kindness. The way he helped Max in staying at his home irrespective of the restrictions and how his wife supported him in the cause, acts as an learning for each one of us.

At times the bonding among the character of the book like Max and Liesel when they read together or she got him newspaper and described the outside details or how Max painted a gift for her birthday are some of beautiful scenery.

Hans and Liesel are the most happy times in the story for me. Hans taught her to read, He cleaned her sheets and even brought her books cutting down his smoking. He also played music for her with that old accordion.

Liesel and Mayor’s wife they had a bonding of their own while she read in her library or she stole from her library.
