kite festival is usually celebrated as Makar Sakranti in many states of India and on the same day falls Pongal, Lohri, Bihu etc in other states which are celebrated as harvest season festivals.

On Makar sakranti a special sweet dish is prepared every year at our home. It is made with milk, rice, daal and sugar. It is decorated  with dry fruits. This is why we siblings loved the festival. We ate pakoras, sweet dishes and flew kites. Whole sky looks colorful by the evening on this day. kites flies from every side.

What we do on kite festival day ?

Now a days I eat yummy food, read books, watch movies and then go outside to see the sky in the evening if there are any kites which I will capture in my camera. Here are my favorite books and movies related to kites.

Recently I read a book Danny, The Champion of the world in which I found a beautiful bonding between Danny and his father and how he spent lovely childhood with his father while learning to make kites and then fly them too, I wish you read the book too.

One other book which I read last year is The Kite Runner – It is a lovely book in which the whole story is heart touching and this book is going to be your favorite too like mine, I bet it.

Then I watch movies like Kai- Po-Che, The Kite Runner etc and nothing more. Being grownup took away my childhood days.

How I celebrated Kite festival in childhood ?

We would get ready for the festival two-three days before and engaged ourselves in making kites. Making kites was very much fun, we collected money from our grandparents and then purchased cheap gum. For the sticks we took help of brass broom in our house and paper was always plenty in student life. Then large number of kites were made and left for drying in a room which was less visited by anyone. The room looked beautiful because of colorful paper lying on the floor.

Unlike other years that year too my brother brought plenty of kites ready during the winter holidays for the kite festival. We both sisters didn’t knew to flew kites, but we asked him to get us one or two kites and then we went to terrace with our kites. We both tried to fly kites and I used to catch one end of the kite and fly it in the sky while my sister caught it by other end and tried to take it to sky. If we were lucky and winds blew strongly our kite flew a little but never it stayed in the sky for more than 5 minutes. And our brother never helped us two in flying kites, he went to fly kites with his friends.

After trying a lot we both got tired, we finished our snacks and looked at all beautiful kites flying and tried again.

The kite fell on the ground. She said, ” wish it had wings!”

Hearing and seeing us mom laughed at us two little sisters and called us towards her. We both went to her then she told us not to be disheartened and told that she will teach us a trick with which our kites can fly higher.

We both looked at each other and our faces glittered to hear this. Tell us mamma, tell us we both shouted.

Then mom told us about things which we should keep in mind while flying kites on kite festival –

  1. Say no to glass thread while flying kites.
  2. Take care of the place where you are standing while flying kites, stay aware of dwarf walls on the roof and try to stay always in the center and concentrated.
  3. Take care of birds while flying kites.
  4. Don’t go over looting kites, and risking life.

And then she gave both of us a kite, tied a manjha ( Kite flying thread ) to it and asked us to run keeping it backside of us. We both did this, it made us smile and our kites were in the sky for short time. We were happy with the lessons she gave us that day.

and I am smiling as I write this post today –
